    Design It - Make It!

  • Students with critical thinking, creative skills, and a problem solving mentality are in high demand by manufacturing, architecture, and other industries. Those who become proficient in basic engineering skills and develop a solid professional image will have many career and educational opportunities.

    The Engineering / Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum is designed to work in partnership with two pre-requisite programs taught in local schools: Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) and Principles of Engineering (POE). For students who complete these prerequisite courses or have instructor approval, the Career Center offers Digital Electronics (DE) and Engineering Design and Development (EDD).

    First semester students in the DE course will use computer simulations to learn about the logic of electronics while designing, testing, and constructing circuits and devices – including micro-controllers and programmable robots.

    In the second semester, students can complete the EDD course, where they will work in teams to develop engineering solutions through research, design, and construction. Mentors from related businesses will guide students through real-world experience.

    The Career Center’s PLTW program will prepare students by immersing them in rigorous engineering problems. Successful students are academically strong, and self-motivated.

    Students from any high school can also join our FIRST Robotics team. The team begins meeting in January and jumps into the challenges and team activities that go along with building a robot for competition.

    Success Indicators

    • Successful completion of IED and POE at local school, if they offer these foundation courses

      If the school does not offer IED and POE, should have other attributes below:

    • Strong Math skills: Algebra

    • Strong Science skills: interest in physics concepts

    • Able to think creatively and outside the box

    • Critical thinking and problem solving skills using logic

    • Interest in computer simulation

    • Interest in robotics, engineering, manufacturing and architecture

    • Self-motivated, able to work independently and with a team

    • College level coursework: Fast pace and high reading level
