Career Center takes 1st place in Cosmetology competition

March 28, 2019 (Jackson, Mich.) – With models and mannequins as their canvas, dozens of high school juniors and seniors got a chance to showcase their creativity at the Potter Center Wednesday night.

Nearly 80 Cosmetology students from the Jackson Area Career Center and Hillsdale Beauty College participated in the 10th annual Hair, Makeup and Fashion Competition. Seniors had to follow a Modern Art theme, completing head-to-toe looks on a model of their choosing. In addition to styling their hair, makeup and outfit, they also had to write a speech on the story behind their creation.

Taking first place for her model “Simplistic Elegance” was senior Sloan Bladowski of Northwest High School. Jackson High School senior Essence Morgan was given an Honorable Mention for her model “Confidence Within”. Bre Cronkite and Hannah Kimble from Hillsdale Beauty College took 2nd and 3rd place respectively, for their “Peacock Warrior” and “Post War” models. Logan Callway of Hillsdale also got an Honorable Mention for her “Lady Gaga” model.

Career Center juniors swept the mannequin competition. They were tasked with styling a mannequin’s hair and makeup according to a “Fantasy” theme. Olivia Applegate of Vandercook Lake took first place for her “Diamond Ice Theme” mannequin. Second place went to Napoleon High School student Kennedy Dunlap for her “Wizard of Oz” mannequin, while Kylee Mulcahy of Jackson High got third place for her “Goddess of Color” mannequin. Maesyn Hynes and Alicia Jiminez, both of Vandercook Lake, were given Honorable Mentions for their “Forest Fairy” and “Candyland” mannequins.

Winners received a bouquet of flowers and various styling tools including professional blow dryers, flat irons and shear kits. Salon Centric, a local salon and beauty supply distributor, donated most of the prizes. Career Center Cosmetology instructor Ronda Applegate says she’s very proud of all of the participants. “The students invested a lot of time in this competition and it was a great way to show their creativity and skills,” said Applegate.

Several students from other Career Center programs assisted with the yearly event. Visual Communication students Gabriel Anderson and Stephanie Hicks from JPEC, Megan Glynn and Jayde Adams of Grass Lake, homeschool student Grace Darling and Felicity Powell of East Jackson took photos and videos during the competition. JROTC students Sage Balcita of Vandercook Lake and Brady Walker of Columbia Central dressed in uniform and assisted the students and models off the stage. Agriscience students Joslyn Schoening and Quanisha Moore of Jackson High, Britany Woods and Kiersten Reeser of Michigan Center and Morgan Schwade and Carley Chamberlin of Hanover-Horton put together the floral arrangements, bouquets and boutonniere.

Admission was free to the competition; however, attendees were asked to make a donation to the local non-profit Go Hungry 4 Hunger. More than $550 was collected during the event, which will help more than a dozen local food pantries provide more than 3,300 meals to the Jackson and surrounding communities.

Cosmetology instructor Lauren Sager says the event was a great success. “All of the students did a great job and it was such a fun experience to share with their family, friends and members of industry.”
