Hot week at Summer Space Camp wraps up with family picnic in cool cafeteria

Jackson, Mich. – Dozens of students and their loved ones enjoyed a summer barbecue in the Torrant Cafeteria Thursday after Mother Nature cut Camp Week short.
Students from the Lyle Torrant & Kit Young Centers, as well as JCISD ASD/MOCI students, were supposed to meet their families at Camp McGregor to wrap up Camp Week on Thursday, but the hot weather forced organizers to alter plans and hold the family picnic at the Torrant cafeteria instead.
“I’m bummed we had to come back, but we took advantage of the time that we had out at camp this week,” said Principal Amy Rogers. “We had a Space Camp theme this year, and it was out of this world with all the activities the kids could take part in.”
Those activities included pontoon rides, tractor rides, arts and crafts, sensory tables, archery, bike rides, moon rock toss, remote control cars, coloring, music, movies and of course, water play. “The favorite activity of the week had to be when the Liberty Fire Department brought the fire hose to cool down the kids,” said Rogers. “Who doesn’t love to get sprayed with a fire hose – or spray the fire hose?! Plus, it’s a great opportunity for our students to have that positive engagement with our emergency personnel.”
Despite camp being cut short a day because of the heat, it was well worth the time and effort that goes into planning such a large event. “We’re thankful we have that big lodge at Camp McGregor to accommodate our students that have more medical needs than others, so they can see what camping is all about." Rogers says it’s a labor of love for everyone involved in Camp Week. “I can’t thank our staff enough for providing this opportunity for our kids – they have to create different schedules, activities and visuals for our students – and that’s a challenge for students who depend on a routine,” said Rogers. “We have a great committee that plans the whole week and the entire staff brings it all together – it’s a beautiful thing.”
