Jackson County schools, PreK programs team up for virtual job fair to address teacher shortage

April 14, 2021

Jackson, Mich. -- It’s not everyday you see competing schools team up for the same cause, but this is no ordinary year. With a teacher shortage impacting schools across the nation, Jackson County schools and early childhood centers are putting themselves in the same place at the same time in hopes of netting a massive pool of qualified candidates to choose from.

The Jackson County PreK-12 and Special Education Virtual Career Fair, a collaboration between the Jackson County Intermediate School District, Michigan Works! Southeast and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, will take place on Wednesday, April 28 from 12pm - 5pm.

“If you’re looking for a career in education, this is the place to find it,” says Shamar Herron, executive Director of Michigan Works! Southeast.  “This virtual job fair is your one-stop-shop to connect with the many schools and early childhood centers throughout Jackson County,” says Herron.

More than 20 employers are participating, including all public, private and charter schools in the county, as well as a few early childhood centers - all looking for the next class of educators ready to make a difference in the lives of PreK-12 and special education students.

“We are working together as a community of connected schools to ensure that our students have the best education possible,” says Jackson County ISD Assistant Superintendent Maureen Keene. “We are currently experiencing a critical shortage of teachers in Jackson County, and in the State of Michigan, at a time when education is critical.  We hope that this job fair will highlight the wonderful opportunities to teach in a great community, and will bring educators to Jackson County,” says Keene.
