Career Center greenhouses opening to public for annual sale
April 29, 2020
Jackson, Mich. - The Jackson Area Career Center is opening its greenhouses to the public for the 12th annual Agriscience/FFA Plant Sale next week. A vast selection of annual, perennials, herbs, vegetables and hanging baskets will be available for purchase.
The sale will be held from 10am - 3pm on Wednesday, May 6, Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8. The Career Center greenhouses are located at 6800 Browns Lake Road in Jackson. Cash, check and credit/debit will be accepted.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several changes have been made to this year’s sale. Customers will have to follow a traffic flow and only so many people will be allowed on site at a time. Customers will also be required to wear a face mask or face covering. There will be a limit of one person per vehicle, so customers are asked to please keep their helpers at home. Career Center staff will be available to help people grab baskets, carry plants and load cars.
“We are asking people to please bring grace, compassion and patience with them as we navigate through the challenges brought about by these unprecedented times,” said Kaci Babineau, Marketing and Special Projects Coordinator for the Jackson County Intermediate School District.
The annual sale is usually run by Agriscience and FFA students - from the planting of thousands of seeds to helping customers load up their cars on the day of the sale. However, when students left on March 13 and didn’t return due to the Governor’s Executive Order closing schools for the rest of the school year, Agriscience instructors, assistants and various Career Center staff took on the task of planting, watering and organizing the sale.
While students had little involvement in this year’s sale, the community can be assured the students will still benefit from it. “The sale generates support for important hands-on learning experiences for our students. Proceeds will go toward student scholarships, FFA memberships costs, class t-shirts, the National Convention trip, and much more,” said Jason Gehrke, Career Center Agriscience instructor and FFA Advisor.
